Cannes is the western end of the coast and the gateway to the two islands that most people never quite get to. Sainte-Marguerite and Saint-Honorat sit twenty minutes offshore, and the water between them is the clearest on this stretch.

The bay itself is wide and shallow enough to anchor almost anywhere, and the Esterel behind it turns red in the late afternoon in a way that photographs badly and looks extraordinary in person.

During the Film Festival the anchorage becomes the best table in town.

How much does it cost to rent a boat in Cannes?
From €1,400 a day for the boat, captain included, and fuel at cost for the route. A four-hour half day starts from €850. A Lérins day uses very little fuel: the islands are twenty minutes off the beach.
Can we take the boat to the Lérins Islands from Cannes?
That is the day most people come to Cannes for. Twenty minutes to the strait between Sainte-Marguerite and Saint-Honorat, the clearest water on this stretch of coast, and a table at La Guérite with the tender waiting. Unlike the ferry, you anchor where you like and leave when you like.
Do I need a licence to rent a boat in Cannes?
No. Every boat comes with its own captain, so nobody aboard needs a licence or any experience. You choose the islands, the cove and the lunch; the captain does the rest.
Can we charter a boat during the Cannes Film Festival?
Yes. In festival week the water is the one quiet place in town, and the boarding quay at the Vieux Port is a short walk from the Palais. Days, half days and evening runs are all available; book well ahead, because that week goes first.
