The anchorage
Menton & the border
The lemon-yellow last town in France, an hour east with the coast sliding by.
Menton is the end of France and it knows it. The old town piles up in lemon, apricot and faded pink to a baroque bell tower, with the mountains coming down almost to the sea behind. It is the warmest corner of the coast and the light in the afternoon is unlike anywhere west of it.
The run east is half the point: Monaco, Cap Martin and Roquebrune go by on the beam, and Italy starts a few minutes further on. It is a long day rather than a lazy one, and it wants a flat morning.
The captain reads the morning and picks the side of the bay the wind is not on. If it is not right on the day, we go somewhere that is.
